What Deep Tissue Sports Massage Is

Deep tissue sports massage is a goal-oriented soft tissue session that targets the muscles and connective tissue you actually use. Unlike relaxation massage, the pressure scales to the body in front of us and the work focuses on the structures loaded by your sport. Quads and hips for lifters. Posterior chain for runners. Shoulders and scapular control for jiu-jitsu. The lateral chain for tennis and pickleball.

Our therapists are trained in sports medicine principles and strength and conditioning. That means the hands on you understand both how tissue breaks down and how to build it back up. We do not crush you for the sake of intensity. We dig where the output is, leave the rest alone.

Legendary Recovery's sports massage stacks with EMS, red light, Normatec compression, and assisted stretching depending on what your training week needs. Most clients run a 60-minute session weekly and stack 30 minutes of Normatec on top.

Who It's For

  • Lifters chasing a PR or coming off a heavy training block
  • Runners managing repetitive load through hips, hamstrings, and calves
  • Jiu-jitsu, MMA, and combat athletes recovering between sessions
  • Tennis, pickleball, and field athletes with asymmetric loading
  • Anyone managing chronic tightness, irritated joints, or post-injury tissue

How A Session Works

  1. AssessmentEvery session starts with a quick check on training, current load, and what you want to feel different after the session ends.
  2. Targeted Soft Tissue WorkThe therapist works the muscles and fascia loaded by your sport. Pressure scales to your tolerance and the goal of the session.
  3. Trigger Point ReleaseWhen the protocol calls for it, the therapist works specific trigger points that are referring pain or locking range.
  4. Stretch + MobilityMost sessions end with PNF stretching to lock the new range into the joints we worked.
  5. Protocol NotesYou leave with a short note on cadence, what to load, what to back off, when to return.

What You'll Feel

  • Immediate range-of-motion gain in the joints we work
  • Lighter tissue tone in the hips, hamstrings, lats, and traps
  • Reduced soreness in the 24 to 48 hours after a hard session
  • Better sleep on the night of session, almost every client reports it
  • A short list of mobility homework to keep the work

Frequently Asked

How is sports massage different from regular massage? +
Regular massage focuses on relaxation. Sports massage focuses on output. The pressure scales to what your body needs, and the work targets the structures your sport loads. The goal is more range, less load on what is irritated, and a body that holds the work into the next training session.
How often should I get a sports massage? +
Most performance clients run weekly during in-season blocks and twice a week leading into competition. Lifters in a heavy block often go weekly. Endurance athletes in mileage blocks sometimes go twice weekly. The 6-session and 12-session packages drop the per-session cost for clients in regular rotation.
Will it hurt? +
Some pressure feels uncomfortable. Real damage does not. The therapist scales pressure to your tolerance and the goal. If something is sharp or actually painful, say so and the pressure adjusts.
Should I work out before or after a massage? +
Train before. Massage after. Heavy training in the four hours after a deep tissue session can blunt the recovery effect. Light movement is fine the same day.
Who delivers sports massage at Legendary Recovery? +
Sessions are delivered by founder Christian Diaz, a licensed massage therapist and certified strength and conditioning specialist, or by Kiki Kennady, a licensed massage therapist with nine years of experience treating professional athletes across the NFL, MLB, IFBB, and UFC.
